Research activities of the Department of Medical Informatics have an interdisciplinary character in the field of information and biomedical sciences. Research is focused on following domains of collecting and analysis of biomedical data and knowledge. Moreover, there are research activities of several mentioned topics studied also in the joint workplace of European Centre of Medical Informatics, Statistics and Epidemiology (EuroMISE) of Charles University and Academy of Sciences (http://www.euromise.org/homepage/homepage.html).

Electronic health record, medical database and health information systems

Research is focused on various accesses to data collection and on medical and health data storing by using new information technologies. Specific problems connected with medical questionnaires, data registers, electronic records and medical databases are studied. Special attention is given to the electronic health record in cardiology and to its multilingual version. The present level of knowledge about the problem comes from results of the project I4C-TripleC of the 4th Framework Programme of the European Commission.

Electronic medical guidelines and biomedical knowledge bases

Guidelines for clinical practice are a tool that leads to improvement and to more effective health care. They aim to recommend the most suitable decision strategy and to optimise patient's health condition, clinical decisions, and heath care expenses. Utilization of new information technologies may improve not only searching for information from electronic medical guidelines but also health care procedure control. With an optimal scenario, electronic medical guidelines are integrated into an information system used by a health institution. Research comes from the project MUM of the program Copernicus.

Biomedical statistics

Research in the field of biomedical statistics is concentrated on solving various interdisciplinary research problems in clinic, epidemiology, and genetics. Cooperation with physicians took place and has been taking place in terms of various grants (for example IGA MZ CR or GA CR)

Information technology in teaching

The Department of Medical Informatics is engaged in interdisciplinary research problems connected with utilization of new information technologies in teaching, for example designing of electronic textbooks and knowledge evaluation by using Internet. The present level comes from results of the project IT-Eductra of the 4th Framework Programme of the European Commission.
